The Timberly Trust

Julia Daniels Moseley’s granddaughter, Julia Winifred Moseley, would continue the tradition of advocating for conservation, preservation, history, land, and nature.

Julia became especially vocal as Brandon’s development projects, such as the Crosstown Expressway and widespread housing and commercial growth, were consuming areas around her. She made her voice known to agencies and local governments, especially in Brandon, and worked tirelessly to help protect the environment. She fought to save the Live Oaks lining Brandon’s Lakewood Drive, proposing to tie a yellow ribbon around the trees to increase visibility and raise awareness. Like her grandmother before her, she was an avid reader and was likely influenced by the fights over preserving the Everglades and the rapid development across the Sunshine State. Newspaper clippings and writings from voices—particularly women such as Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Rachel Louise Carson, and Marjorie Harris Carr—were among the documents she clipped and archived at the Nest, likely forming the foundation for her creation of the Timberly Trust in 1992

Preservation and interpretation are key to all we do

Mission

The Timberly Trust aims to preserve the Moseley Homestead and its surroundings in as natural a state as possible, recognizing it as an early pioneer Florida homestead listed on the National Register of Historic Places (known as “The Nest”). The Trust was established to protect the house, including both its exterior and interior, as well as accessory buildings and the diverse native Florida flora and fauna. It works to provide historical context about The Nest, the people and community connected to it, and the architecture, art, décor, and its relationship to the environment.

The vision for the Moseley Homestead Trust includes opportunities for scholarly research, writing, seminars, lectures, and exhibitions related to local history, architecture, biology, geology, and important archaeological discoveries. The plan also envisions developing in-residence programs for writers, naturalists, environmental scientists, and other scholars.

The Timberly Trust, founded by Julia Winifred Moseley, continues to work toward securing funding to preserve, share, and protect the Moseley Homestead so that future generations can understand the importance of the past in the present and the connection between humans and the natural world.
